Wines feature heavily in my cooking, whilst I don't actually put wine into everything I cook, I'm usually drinking it while I am cooking! I don't keep extensive notes on the wines I drink, but when I happen across a good drop and the feeling takes me, I have been known to make a little water colour sketch of the label by way of a reminder of a decent bottle. It's a bit like Hansel's trail of breadcrumbs through the forest, the idea is that you can re-trace your steps! Don't be expecting Oz Clark or Jancis Robinson. I'm neither qualified nor inclined to bombard you with grandiose adjectives denoting perceived fruity flavours. Suffice to say that, if I could be bothered to get the water colours out, then the wines featured may be worth closer regard!

This was a chance discovery in Andalucia. if I'm totally honest I liked the label so went for it. Having said that I am particularly fond of Verdejos from the Rueda region. It took me a while to track down a UK supplier, but AA Wines came up trumps! It's a bit pricey at twelve quid with the Euro being so strong, but well worth it!
Ingredients
Verdejo, a white grape variety common within the Rueda region in Spain often producing light and crisp wines.
Method
Drink it!

A splendid good value for money Ribera del Duero. Ribera seems to be the up-coming winemaking region in Spain, described by Jancis Robinson as the modern red wine miracle of northern Spain. Ribera del Duero is certainly giving the Rioja region a run for its money in terms of producing good value wines. Speaking of good value wines, I bought this one from Cairns & Hickey and will no doubt be buying some more!
Ingredients
Grapes
Method
Drink this too!

An amazing wine from south west France. This was a 2003, dry, oaky, the price was kinda jokey, but worth it! OK a somewhat flippant description of a glorious white wine from southern France, but in the absence of a more cultured appreciation, one definately worth exploring.
Ingredients
More than likely, Sauvingnon blanc and Semillon which are both popular varieties within the Appellation Controlle (AC) Graves.
Method
Pour into a glass! Drink with old friends.

Oak aged biggie from the Ribera del Duero region. This was a 2003 (which I drank in 2007) so relatively young, but not naive! Prado Rey is allegedly making its way onto the shelves of Madrid's trendiest tapas bars, which means that Ilkley is way ahead of the game because I bought this at Martinez Wines a great little independent wine merchants purveying a fine array of Spanish wines.
Ingredients
Tempranillo
Method
This worked really well with a lamb casserole - I think it was slow cooked lamb shanks, but I would be lying if I said I was sure!

A cracker! Good value, reliable red grown just south of the Navarra region along the Rio Ebro! Campo de Borja is the Denominacion d'origen (DO). The price has climbed since I did the sketch - looking at £6.50 nowadays!
Ingredients
Tempranillo
Method
Drink with spicy food - works well with a Chili

Albarino from the Rias Baxias region on the Western Atlantic coast is quite possibly the best kept, rapidly spreading secret in northern Spain! Making wine in the region since 1904, these chaps must be getting something right because its on the wine list at the Box Tree restaurant in Ilkley! It's another from Martinez Wines and well worth looking at!
Ingredients
Albarino grapes, a thick skinned tough guy also known as Alvarinho in closely neighbouring Portugal.
Method
Sit on the cliff tops and enjoy the sea air!

This one came in the mixed case I ordered from AA Wines when i'd tracked down a UK supplier of Finca la Colina. I'm ashamed to say that Blanco Arien was just making up the numbers! But boy what a number - Blanco Arien, i'd drink that again!
Ingredients
Arien, apparently Spain's most common and widespread grape variety.
Method
Drink it responsibly!

Here's a new chance discovery, an excellent suggestion from within the walls of Chez-vin in Otley (the huge hill outside Otley is know as the Chevin, which makes Dave Lawson, the sole proprietor of Chez-vin a bit of an expert when it comes to nomenclature). He's also pretty good at recommending wines I might like, this being one of the best of his recommendations!
Ingredients
100% Godello from the Denominacion d'origin Valdeorras, which according to Jancis & Hugh (World Atlas of Wine 6th edition), 'deserves more attention'!
Method
Listen well to the wise words and give it as much attention as you can truly afford! Which at just shy of a tenner a bottle ought be just every now and again!

Splendid good value red from the Valdeoras region of Spain. Cherries, sawdust and blueberries, I think. Don't take my word for it have a go yourself.

Outstanding rose from AC Bandol. Without doubt, the best rose i've come across. It's very hard to get hold of apparently, and I can understand why. Goes for just shy of £20 a bottle. London fine wines stock it
Ingredients
Mainly mourverdre, with cinsault, grenache and carignan. All makes for a beautiful pale onion skin/organic salmon pink colour.
Method
Drink with a range of foods, it's certainly up for it.

Prado Rey venture into the world of Verdejo! A fine dry white with crisp, crisp flavours (more ready salted than cheese and onion). Come to think of it, this wine would go rather nicely with a lump of cheddar and a couple of super thin slices of onion!
Ingredients
The Verdejo grape grown in the Rueda region. Unusual for the chicos y chicas at Prado Rey, because they are normally based in the Ribera del Duero region.
Method
Sip lovingly and worry not where it was grown!
